In the land exchange, which has been in the workx for several years and wascompleted Feb. 8, Doe Run receivedx 438 acres of federal land surrounding the existinb West Fork and Brushy Creek tailings pond that are adjacent to existingcompany land. The Foresrt Service received 441 acresof non-federal landsd with highway frontage adjacent to Bell Mountain Wildernesx Area and river frontage along the West Fork of the Blaci River.
According to a Doe Run the exchange will help the companty better manage its mine tailings areas and will benefit the Forest Service by consolidating federal land thereby reducing the number of isolated piecesof land, while also providing additional land for publicx recreation and wildlife habitat. The exchange will also reduce theForest Service's cost of maintaining landlines, corner markers and surveys by reducingh ownership boundaries by 36 percent. Prior to completin the exchange, Doe Run said it workedd with the on a plan to protecgt theIndiana bat, an endangered speciez that often nests in the area.
Doe Run will be strategicallh trimming trees to discourage nesting near the tailings Basedin St. The Doe Run Co. is a privately held naturalo resources company and the largest integratecd lead producer in theWestern Hemisphere.
